i liked the review. nitpicking here, but it was a little repetitive. i increasingly find with post rock albums, especially mediocre ones, that its difficult to say anything significant after you establish that its unexciting instrumental music. i knew why you didn't like it and how it sounded after paragraph 1. the rest is well written, but a tad superfluous.

i like that downer

thanks Downer. and I'll keep that advice in mind. generally, with negative reviews for well-liked albums (especially with a popular band like this) I try to make my reviews a little more comprehensive and lengthy just to make sure I get my points across loud and clear because people are going to be looking for holes, but a shorter approach would make sense too-- this could definitely be pared down a little by removing some reiterated sentences.

Well this just grew on me completely out of nowhere. Bumped up to a 4. (At one point, this was dangerously close to getting bumped down to a 3.)

This isn't bad though. =/
I know in comparison to the genre it isn't all that amazing but it's not a bad album.

2nd biggest grower of the year for me. (the 1st being James Blake's album)

Coming from a fan, this is a huge snorefest. I do like the first track, however.

Agreed, it's pretty dull.
I like a few of the tracks though. But, I won't buy this.

About 2 weeks ago, i would've agreed with you completely. Like i said, it's been a huge grower for me.
I guess i'm somewhat partial to this band in general. TEINACDP was one of the first non-GYBE post-rock albums i heard. I kinda lost interest in this band, but this (as well as a recent re-discovering of Cold Dead Place and the rest of their discog) reminded me why i enjoyed them so much in the first place.

I'm not sure it's dull; it's just not big in comparison to other post rock outings.

I think this review is pretty scathing, and pretty unfair to what makes Explosions such a masterful band. The truth as I perceive it is: I think of this band, more than any other, as being the pioneers of Post-Rock, and helping to push this fantastic genre into the ears of more mainstream listeners. I will concede that they are generally less inventive than some of their Post-Rock counterparts (like GYBE), but they've found a process that works for them, and continues to work.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Reviewer speaking.
what did you find to be too scathing or unfair, out of curiosity?
also: not sure if I mentioned it in the review but I'm a general fan of EITS
and this is stretching reality more than a little: "more than any other, as being the pioneers of Post-Rock"
but either way, thanks for addressing your complaints respectfully... that's rare for first-posters with gripes : )
