Definitely and absolutely overrated, I find this one. problem is, jimi tried to diversify his sound here (even moreso than on Axis) and he just wasn't a good enough songwriter for that risk, period. I mean, "Rainy Day, Dream Away", "Have You Ever Been", "Long Hot Summer", in what universe are these supposed to be accomplished songwriting efforts? Plus the jam Voodoo Child is a snoozefest. I love blues music, but this is just. another. jam. "Moon Turn The Tides" is just what everybody needed during late 1968 (the era of roots rock and the origins of prog rock)...a freaking "vibe" jam. Jimi, you were late to the party :/ Plus, "Still Raining", "Gypsy Eyes" are just early blues era updates; only thing is, he could just have covered the songs he was influenced by to write these ones instead of creating lesser copies. Finally, "House Burning Down" has its charms, but the main riff is just your standard Hendrix-y guitar figure.

The production is really intriguing, though. Possibly the most adventurous out of all his studio albums.

Is it hyperbolic if I say that A Merman I Should Turn to Be basically predicted all of prog? Cos like this was the year before Court of the Crimson King came out, which is where I generally hear that prog became a genre, but Merman basically has all the components that songs like Echoes and Epitaph have
