insofar as most religions posit a divine power (or powers) that will bring about a Promised Land or Kingdom of Heaven (in other words a perfected world) apart from human activity, adherents to these religions will just sit by and wait for God to redeem the world rather than actually make the world a better place

in the 18th century, the atheist Voltaire wrote that "Even if we discovered that God didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent Him." he thought that some people would not act morally if there wasn't a God to fear, so it was necessary to control people

in the 19th century, the atheist Bakunin reversed Voltaire's statement, writing that "Even if we discovered that God did exist, it would be necessary to abolish Him." Bakunin thought that the belief in a God who would make everything right would prevent humanity from making things right themselves

i would say that for anyone who would act differently if they found out God didn't exist, it's useful that they still believe in God. still, it'd be better if they'd just act morally without fearing a God

yes

Bakunin's politics suck, he had a really damning connection with Nechaev, and he was an inferior thinker to Marx

but that line was awesome

Utopian? I don't find mutualism to be that utopian, simply market anarchism with a focus on cooperatives. I'd argue global marxism is a lot more utopian.

Lewis it seems like you can't decide whether it's worth engaging with MJ or whether you really want him to just leave.

haha not that different from yours to particular staffers. But I'm not a ridiculous "pro-mj" type user as some others are, but

rather his points are conversation sparking and worth engaging with.

He has a lot of valid points, but then he hinders his progress with absurb rationalization and topic shifts on to more profound, irrelevant things. His conversation shifts would be engaging if he wasn't forcefully telling us things while using pretension as the catalyst for recruiting lesser minds to his cause.
