Eric, I feel something like rating an album without hearing it is something you would put down another user for doing.

If I only heard the singles, and just assumed it was like the entire album, is that considered wrong? Cause I've done it a few times..

I've seen tv ads for icp.

What, late at night, on Comedy Central? Doesn't count.

They have massive promotion through merch.

That's incorrect. The merchandising is only for the fans. People wouldn't know they had any merchandise unless they knew who ICP are, which most people don't.

They are the Kiss of clown shit rap.

The only thing that's similar is that they both wear face paint, and Alice Cooper and Screamin' Jay Hawkins did that years before Kiss.

They've had they're own radio show.

Internet radio, directed at their fans.

They were televised on snl, mad tv, woodstock, and WWE and WCW wrestling in which their albums were promoted.

They were parodied on SNL.

Sure, they've appeared on television, but that doesn't mean that they're well known or mainstream.

Oh and they also were heavily promoted back in the day on a Disney owned label but dropped after a while for their lyrical content and they had to make their own label because they suck so bad no one would sign them.

Completely incorrect.

1. Psychopathic Records was founded in 1992. ICP had a huge fanbase through this label long before being signed to any other label.

2. Jive and Hollywood Records never promoted them.

My fucking grandmother knows who ICP are...
Everyone knows who they are.
Their merch is everywhere...
I've seen tv ads on mtv2 for them.
ICP are just as big of marketing whores as Kiss.

if icp gets parodied on snl, they are everything but underground.

ICP are not "marketing whores". They put out stuff their fans want. It's not required to buy their merchandise to be a fan. It exists for people who want it. They even say on one of their albums, "Don't buy our fuckin' action figures, bitch, I don't give a fuck".

Everyone in hip hop has merchandise. You can't single out ICP as "marketing whores" when that's simply not true.

Wow. They don't give a fuck? Awesome, you have persuaded me, brb. Gotta 5 all their classics.
Quit with the red herring shit. That's what bands do, they put shit out their fans like. duh.
there is a difference between selling some shirts and selling action figures dude.

A lot of ICP fans are nerds who like comic books and toys. One of the acts on Psychopathic Records, Twiztid, frequently raps about this kind of stuff. ICP themselves used to be into Dungeons & Dragons.

If one can get excited over a toy based off of Army of Darkness or Evil Dead, is it not conceivable that there might be people out there that might want ICP action figures?

Wait.... wait.... WAIT! They played DnD? That makes perfect sense out of everything. And lets get something straight, everybody likes toys. But the thing is.. do you really NEED an ICP action figure? What purpose does that serve? I've never wanted to have an imaginary tea part with Violent J, he'd eat all the food.

...ok, i'm ranting about nothing now.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to like this music, but saying that their music is awful and rating it 1 star is going a little too far. As another poster pointed out, if you really hate it, 1.5 should be enough, maybe 2 or 2.5, but it's not as if it's the most awful music in the world. It's just something some people get and some don't, like the Beastie Boys.

"Underground" means that you achieve huge success without major label support or massive promotion, which is certainly what ICP did. They have never had promotion, and they released all of their albums on Psychopathic Records, a label they founded.

why does being "underground" (a label that, if used like you do, would apply to sooooooooo much music) make the music any better?

Underground musicians are dedicated to serving their own musical purpose, as opposed to many manufactured pop groups. The industry is so full of so-called "musicians" that are clearly only out to make money that when a artist with actual vision succeeds on their own merits, it counts for something.

I never said that being underground automatically makes music good, but when an underground artist pops up at #4 on the Billboard charts, that's more exciting than seeing a mainstream act I don't care about, like Lil Wayne, at #1 or #5, or wherever.

but you're saying that--

when the general populace appreciates a musician (and hence rises on the charts) it's good. hmmm, curious of you to put so much faith in what my little sister listens to you. I'd argue that most people don't, in fact, have great taste in music (not being an asshole, there's no problem with this really).

and also, your definition of "underground" would comprise a hefty percentage of the bands heralded here at Sputnik.

The general populace doesn't buy ICP albums. This album charted highly solely based on its fanbase.

so you're saying that because ICP fans like ICP a lot, it's ok to like ICP?
