I don't know about this band. The times where they embrace their pop sensibilities and write decent hooks are more often than not really effective and raise a song above average, but then they tend to ruin it with those generic, scene-esque breakdowns. Let me use "Cutthroat Collapse" as an example. The verses have a really urgent feel that pay off beautifully when that gloriously catchy chorus kicks in, but then they implement that ridiculous chugging breakdown at around 2:10 that's poorly executed and juxtaposing. It's like they feel obligated to put these complimentary "heavy" moments in each of their songs. They need to stop squandering their potential and break away from the shackles of their scene/fanbase.

And those low screams - like the ones in said breakdown - literally sound retarded.

They've always sounded ridiculously sceney and cliche to me but thats one of the reasons i like them, they actually pull it off well. It's more notable on the question though.

Interesting thoughts tombits... Even more interesting is your choice of example, since that seems to be the track that most people love around here. I actually know what you're getting at & even agree to some extent. Although I think you exaggerate a little since (as I said in the review) not too much approaches that heaviness elsewhere on the album.

So I don't think they feel obligated to go into "heavy" mode & (again, as I said in my review), I feel that opener was a statement of intent as such because It was a mile away from what was on their poorly recieved previous album. In a sense, that pevious album did try & break away from the scene/fanbase & for the most part struggled to succeed.

Well to be honest, I've only made it through the whole album once so far (although the opener has brought me back a couple of times) so I probably don't have a real sense of how their overall sound. But yeah, I really hope the fact that their previous albums weren't recieved too well doesn't prevent them from growing and maturing as artists, because that would be a terrible shame. I can honestly see this band going in a more art-rock orientated direction from here; as an analogy, think Dredg and their progression from Leitmotif to El Cielo, or As Cities Burn and the change from Son, I Loved You... to Come Now Sleep. Very promising.

Haha, sorry Davey. I'm just trying to get my head around this album being the best post-hardcore release of all time and it's not working in the slightest. I'm not saying UR OPINION IZ WRONG. I just don't get it or agree with it.

Curbside Goodbye is still probably the best song here.

"i don't know if i could find it in myself to like this more than the question, that album holds a lot of meaning for me" Another one. Did that album come out on a lunar eclipse or something? Haha.

"I can honestly see this band going in a more art-rock orientated direction..." More interesting thoughts tombits. Again, I can see where you're coming from & they might be able to pull it off, but I don't think it will occur. Their overall melody & catchiness is one of their key strengths. They risk losing that (or at least not maximising it) if they head off in that direction. Personally, I think they will continue to work on their technicality & a little more experimenting.

"still the fantasy football has been picking up a bit recently" Yes, we are both ina bit of form at present. It's that important Christmas part of the season.

"Haha, sorry Davey" I'll forgive you Adam.

hey good review Davey, i've been digging this album so much lately. don't know if it's quite classic-level material though. i hate to return to a previous argument, but there are better post-hardcore records than this.

i do think it may be one of the catchiest and most accessible post-hardcore records ever though...that is the album's one claim to classic status which is quite valid.

could you state succinctly what your main reason is for the album being a classic? cuz in the review you give lots of reasons why the album is really good, but i didn't see any clear reason you gave for why it is the best.

Thanks Stanley. All good points & if I was boring, I would have put "catchiest and most accessible post-hardcore record ever ". LOL... Just kidding... But you are on the right track with what I meant.

As I stated on one of my previous comments, I feel that people under-rate (sometimes berate) artists for making any kind of music accessible... Mainstream even. When it comes to what is essentially a genre that (I believe is not relatively accessible), I look at it totally opposite. I think it is a skill... A talent. And when a band can do that while also keeping what essentially made them a post-hardcore band in the first place (screaming, technicality, emotion, aggression, etc...), then I feel that is an amazing achievement.

Raaargh. The clean vocals are so gorgeous at points. They do some really cool rhythmic vocal/ instrumental stops in The Poor and The Prevalent too. I find myself listening to this a lot more.

Davey's review resulted in a lot of reevaluating of the record, so probably yes.
