Even though I liked Year Zero and Ghosts, I'd never been particularly interested in hearing this album...but then I saw NIN live yesterday and they closed with Hurt. Now this album is on my 'must-listen-to' list. As the overall priority.

This review is incredible...arguably the best i've ever read in my life. This album sounds amazing...I still havent listened to it all the way. The only song I have by NIN is "The Hand That Feeds". Anyone reccomened this?

Yes, yes, yes and...er...yes
Along with everything else they've ever done ever
| | | I am going to go on record and say this.
The first section of this album up to about, lets say Closer, is absolutely brilliant. Mr. Self Destruct, Piggy and Heresy in particular are the big highlights for me. But then it comes to Closer. This song does nothing for me. Perhaps i've just been way too caught up in films and literature that explore sex and the human psyche, and have completely destroyed the mystique for me but either way the themes of this song come off as really corny as do the arrangements. It's something that really bugs me about NIN. It dampens my enthusiasm for the rest of the album and I almost always cut it off here. The rest of the album is good but little grabs my attention, it's all rather meh in terms of what else is on offer in the world of industrial.
Also I have to wonder, with this review it claims a reference to Nietzsche critical views of belief systems in it's themes. I don't believe that because there's some vague link to Nietzsche famous "god is dead" school of thought that there is some kind of extended credibility to this album beyond what it is. Which is a good album with some great tracks, but not much more.

just bumped this .5 yay
| | | I just tumbled across this at a friend's house, I had gifted it to him some time ago. I decided to re-listen, and I've been completely blown away. This deserves some more listens before a rating, but damn is it good.
Also, great review Med. Really solid, easy to read, and even compelling.

dude, Closer is probably the greatest electronica songs ever. I guess if you've studied the theme a lot that it ruins it for you, but the atmosphere of Closer is fucking immense, I kinda feel sorry for you.

"Heresy" reeks of Nihilism breh and, overall, I see a pretty strong Nietzsche connection.
| | | I sense a pretty strong Neitzsche connection in Texas Drag Queen Massacre's song Your God Sucks as well.
Its been a party for me,
Since the day I died,
Im just having the time,
Of my afterlife,
No need to breathe,
No need to think,
I need sex and drugs,
And a fucking drink.
Add a moment of violence,
To your soul,
Put your horns in the air,
For rock and roll,
I'm all messed up,
For a night on the town,
And I thank my lucky scars,
That I went down.
Hell yeah! Satan is the way,
Hell yeah! Every fucking day,
Six six six! I can never get enough,
I've got one thing to say to you:
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
But my god swallows.
Well Jesus was a hippy,
And Mary was a whore,
I read the bible once,
And I got bored,
Damn disgrace,
From the human race,
With black make-up,
Slapped upon my face.
Bad is good,
And good is bad,
When I see you happy,
It makes me sad,
One finger salute,
Thats all you need,
Hold it up in the air,
For your god can see.
Hell yeah! Satan is the way,
Hell yeah! Every fucking day,
Six six six! I can never get enough,
I've got one thing to say to you:
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
But my god swallows,
Yeah!
Hell yeah! Satan is the way,
Hell yeah! Every fucking day,
Six six six! I can never get enough,
I've got one thing to say to you:
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Your god sucks!
Heresy is my favourite song off the album, and the lyrics are well written. But still, the review claims this album has some direct, relevant reference to a famous philosopher who was all about critical attacks on belief systems when the connection to me seems vague at best. Your god sucks, etc.

I am willing to bet you have listened to much electronic music before.

The atmosphere feels forced, and more of a parody of industrial rather then something worthwhile belonging to the genre. Just my two cents.
