ngl I have no memory of the verses at all but yeah the chorus + Edge's bridge is super tight, it's better than anything on SOI (not a high bar to set admittedly)
speaking of which I wish they'd just fucking released Songs of Ascent instead of starting over with the new sessions because nothing this decade has been remotely as good as Moment of Surrender, Cedars etc

i agree hard. as hit or miss as this is at times when it hits it really delivers. unknown caller is probably my favorite on here and probably one of their most interesting songs from a compositional standpoint since pop. moment and cedars are also magnificent (heh), and fez - being born is pretty cool iirc
that being said, get on your boots and stand up comedy are absolutely dreadful

agreed [2].. this album has a lot of interesting things going on.. even if the band don't take most of those things to logical, good ends.. but at least it sounds like an old band experimenting again.. songs of innocence is a stock u2 album..

Moment of Surrender is the single best song post-Pop imo, no real competition except maybe Mercy and that's not even on an album
this should have been two albums. take the first third and the final third and combine that with Winter and some of the SOA b-sides and you've got a really beautiful, experimental album. then take Crazy through Stand Up Comedy and chuck them on SOI where they belong, and you've got a pretty decent pop album
as it is, this is just confused about what it wants to be, and it almost disappears completely in the middle until Breathe/Cedars save it

i might playlist that at some point, although honestly ive never heard the b sides from SOA
my fav post pop song is probably miracle drug or kite, but moment is definitely top 5

the SOA stuff has never been released (except EBW in Coldplay-ified version on SOI). at some point they had at least nine finished songs for it but they cut it all and decided to go with the SOI material instead. but the general consensus is that they could have released an album full of stuff like Winter, I believe they referred to it as meditative and tranquil and other such words

oh i thought by SOA b sides you meant the bonus tracks lol
yea i wish we had a mellower album from them that put together moment, unknown caller, cedars, winter, and like North Star and stuff (i dont really remember a lot of the names of songs from the songs of ascent sessions). might have to dig up some live recordings just to see what some of those songs may have been like

I've always really loved this one tbh, lots of interesting textures and the slower cuts here like Moment and Cedars are among their best. Even that middle stretch of Crazy-Stand Up doesn't bother me too much, goofy as those can be.

I like crazy tbh. I used to love boots when i was like 12 and then i listened to the lyrics. same thing with stand up

yeah Crazy is actually a great song
at this point I've just kind of accepted that Bono will supply us with 2 or 3 lyrical asspulls per album, and as far as the instrumentation goes, Boots and Stand Up do a good job making up for it imo

eh boots kind of wastes an otherwise super catchy and relatively urgent riff with weak verses and a weak vocal melody and performance overall. based on the way of how its constructed, especially the "let me in the sound" part the song requires much more punch than it has, especially in bonos vocals and it just isnt there

Crazy is tight agreed love the "oh be slow" part with the guitar chiming in the background is my shit
Boots through Being Born is a little bit shit

being born is probably a highlight off this for me tbh. white as snow i dont like tho. one of the only mellower songs on here thats actually just kinda dull
don't really like the t/t tbh. something about bonos vocals always kinda annoyed me in the song. it's still pretty decent tho

oh damn I love all three of those
t/t is a perfect opener for the mood of this and I've always found White as Snow stunning
Only real complaint I have with Being Born is how it builds and builds to its own lil' crescendo but then the energy is sapped by the slow start to White as Snow; if they had placed a more upbeat track between the two, it would've been a huge help for the flow

No Line
Magnificent
Breathe
Winter
White as Snow
Crazy Tonight
Winter 2 (which is the Brothers ver)
Unknown Caller
Moment of Surrender
Cedars of Lebanon
is the ideal tracklist imo. I have the cut songs on their own little EP because I occasionally crave Boots like I crave junk food
