wow i just made your point for you? it's a good thing i'm not planning to be a lawyer. haha

so you would sacrifice creativity for emotion? it's not like that's a bad thing, but that's exactly why i could never give this higher than a 2.5 or 3. i mean think about it...Linkin Park has some very emotional songs.

pop isn't all about creativity. it's about hooks and emotion, for the most part. i just wrote a review on the new mika cd regarding this - mika is creative as fuck, but that doesn't necessarily mean his version of pop is anything more than just good

yeah i understand that...pop deff is not all about creativity. i myself dabble in some Kelly Clarkson, Feist, The Killers, Michelle Branch, Rihanna, Phil Collins, No Doubt, etc. but i only enjoy certain songs from these artists, because without a focus on creativity...the songs all start to sound the same.

so i can definitely understand enjoying the standout songs from some mainstream pop artists like Taylor or Kelly Clarkson. but enjoying entire albums? based on just hooks (most of which are quite generic and get old quickly), and emotion (which borders on being pretentious at times)? i mean yes i can fall in love with some SONGS based on just simple hooks and emotion, but when a whole ALBUM is based on it? not so much.

the good thing about swift, though, is that she never comes off as pretentious

well idk...if you define pretentious as being pompous and fake, then yes you're right. but pretentious can also mean conceited and self-focused, and that Taylor can be at times with her lyrics. or at least she sometimes comes across that way. i mean yes the lyrics are honest and passionate, but at some point i grow a little weary of listening to her basically singing her diary entries to me. it's as if the only thing she ever thinks about is her relationships.

How can you enjoy Anberlin then...?! Stephen Christian has no idea how to sing about anything other than personal experience.

At least she's better at acoustic pop than Nevershoutnever (or Never Shout Never when he's "feeling sad")

Caleb:

#1: Stephen Christian can write much more intricate and complex music than Taylor Swift, so that puts them on totally different levels. With Taylor, the focus is ALL on the lyrics, because the music is intentionally simple and generic. But with Anberlin and Anchor & Braille, the focus is more on the music than the words.

#2: Stephen is older and has seen much more of life. Therefore, his "relationship" lyrics are miles ahead of Taylor's when it comes to maturity. Also, his lyrics are MUCH more poetic and artistically inclined than Taylor's. He can be very creative with his metaphors, and makes even the simplest concepts into intricate poetry. He treats lyrics AS AN ART FORM, rather than emotional, journal-entry outbursts.

#3: Your premise is wrong in the first place. Stephen has quite a few songs that have nothing to do with any personal relationship. Readyfuels, Change The World, *Fin, Symphony of Blase, Dance Dance, Godspeed, The Resistance, Disappear, Soft Skeletons, Miserabile Visu, etc. And many of the ones that are about a personal relationship touch on broader themes and issues within the lyrics, rather then just writing about one emotion at one time.

Hanson, suck on that and shut up. You know better than to be that obnoxious.

but you at least get my point, right? i appreciate Taylor's candid honesty and emotion, but it's not exactly what i would call artistic or mature.
