Yeah genres are stupid, especially when people argue about what bands are so and so genre and shit.
Here's the point: Very great band is basically it's own genre. Bands like Minus The Bear, Foals, Converge even Intronaut are bands who defy genres and it's stupid to put labels on them or most bands for the matter.

I think formulating pre-conceived notions on whether you would like something or not based on any kind of label it's been given is dumb.
genres get kind of goofy, but ultimately it does do something for identifying who they are like an possibly influenced by. ideally it would all just be terms that basically simplified saying "this band sounds like this band in this way" but people get carried away with it.

But the more popular a genre gets bands start to stick to certain sound to fit in. Think about how exploited and generified screamo/post-hardcore/and faux metalcore have become.

I think even without the genre associations that could be made, there still would be a certain amount of artists trying to stick to a particular sound from day one due to one reason or another.
but yes, I agree there are downsides. It's just something people have a tendency to do unconsciously, I think. they want to organize stuff and categorize it and make it easier to sort out, and that grouping has negative natural effects. this type of thing happens with any kind of entertainment, job, vehicle, food, etc...
obv in music's case, the industry plays into the situation as well

genres were only created for people who don't like all kinda of music so that they can say "what is it like?" and automatically decide weather they would like it without listening

I usually hate the sound of a fretless bass but Intronaut pulls it off quite well.
The basslines in Prehistoricisms and Any Port are sick.

Intronaut is all about that bass.

hell yeah it is. wine festival here is always especially chill with the medieval market, mead stand, archers, knights, people playing old music, good food and less annoying fuckwads/poltical idiots out for fighting. if weather's good I might even get out my kilt.
