It's a very cool album with some slight hiccups.

it was briefly demoted to a 3.5
i like it less than the other two and i probably like it a bit less than maxinquaye (and i know neither of these is an uncommon take) but man... crazy how good they were

This is as good as Maxinquaye and still better than Blue Lines and overall great yh

"still better than Blue Lines"
π‘ no!
|
| |
Tbh this and blue lines are both definitely better than maxinquaye, one of the worst of the trip hop classics (tricky is bad at making albums not have bad songs) but hell is around the corner is better than anything on either
|
| |
To be clear, I connect with the standouts on maxinquaye much more than anything on this or blue lines on a personal level, but these two MA albums are much more cohesive and better put together than Maxinquaye regardless. Tricky is reeeallly bad at putting albums together and editing out the trash.

Like what the actual fuck are Brand New Youre Retro and Black Steel
|

Also letβs be real Protection > Blue Lines for Sly alone

Sly is πππππππππππ for sure. Wow.
We've been over this before, never really connected with Maxinquaye at all, or any of the Tricky solo stuff for that matter.

"Like what the actual fuck are Brand New Youre Retro and Black Steel"
The former is a really fun track, IMO, and the latter is one of the most imaginative covers/reinterpretations of a song, I've come across.

I did fw Black Steel when I was most into Maxi, but would agree that it doesn't belong on that album at all. Would have made a nest bonus track, fun track
The tracks that do belong though mmmm, Hell, Aftermath, Pumpkin, Overcome (best ver of Karmacoma?) yes plz
