especially because it's available in all these crazy audiophile formats like SACD

Which, incidentally, make no difference at all.

Well they kinda do, because it's usually the only CD format where they employ some kind of non-compressed mastering (at least for popular music, not sure for classical and jazz...).

There are instances of this, but these occurences aren't an illustration of any inherent limitations of CD quality audio.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at.

Right, which is a dissappointment in and of itself, because there need't be the requirement for SACD or other so-called hi-res formats because everything we need could be easily fulfilled by 16/44.1.

I agree, no doubt. It IS a damn shame, but from a marketing perspective pure genius, because there are people who are willing to pay the ridiculous prices they ask for these CDs. Not to mention the new crop of super-hi-res digital files that are being promoted these days. Can't even hear the difference apart from confirmation bias, if you're comparing two good masters.

Exactly. Blind examinations, in every instance show there's basically no point to these offerings. Humans are not infallible creatures. Our hearing is contstrained by processes determined by evolution, etc, etc.
Interestingly, sites like HDTracks, appear to, at least from my research, upsample 16 bit files to 24 bits (a hilariously pointless endeavour) to sell them off to the highest bidder.

Just got this on vinyl performed by the USSR orchestra, sounds amazing.
Also, just because you can't hear certain frequencies doesn't mean that they don't exist or not have an effect on you. Ultra low frequencies for example are so powerful that they can make someone violently ill without even hearing the sound, not saying that's the effect I want from music tho lol. That's one of the reasons I like vinyl, I feel the dynamic frequencies have more to offer than cd or flac formats.

"Petrushka >>>>>>"
A fantastic piece of music, no doubt, but does it surpass this? I don't know if I can agree. There are some incredible moments in this piece.

the ending of this piece fucking sucks. it falls flat on its face.
Petrushka just makes more sense, and it has as many great moments.

"Petrushka just makes more sense, and it has as many great moments."
I can give you that. It certainly is well-arranged, perhaps even more effectively than "Le Sacre du Printemps". I suppose I just find myself captivated by the latter's primeval qualities. Maybe it's more a "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" type thing.

Here u go qt now criticize my potentially poor taste in classical music (though I pretty much snatched all the Nonesuch releases this store had to offer considering it was very cheap and I am in dire need of more classical vinyl in my collection)
Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F Major / Claude Debussy - String Quartet in G Major, OP. 10
Elgar - String Quartet in E Minor, OP. 83 / Sibelius - String Quartet in D Minor (Voces Intimae), OP. 56
Arnold Schoenberg - Ode To Napoleon Bonaparte (spelled "Buonaparte" here), For String Quartet, Piano and Reciter, OP. 41 / Anton Webern - String Quartet, OP. 28 / Igor Stravinsky - Three Pieces for String Quartet and Concertino for String Quartet
Johann Sebastian Bach - Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 2LP (Cover is pre horrible)
Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) and Four Etudes for Orchestra (Mono)
Dmitri Shostakovich - Sonata For Cello and Piano, OP. 40 / Richard Strauss - Sonata for Cello and Piano in F Major, OP. 6
You wanted discussion on a classical thread, tree. Here it is.

that's pretty good actually, the ravel/debussy quartets are essential and i really like the shostakovich cello sonata
