I prefer side B with the female vocalist to side A with the dude tbh. There's something more elementally captivating about her vocalizations.

She's got much more style, but Brendan Perry's vocals are often overlooked. His tracks are often the most deceptively strong and many fans end up preferring him.

That said, Summoning of the Muse, Cantara, Avatar, Circumradiant Dawn and Host of Seraphim are all in a realm of their own. I don't think I really clicked with Perry until I'd heard Black Sun and Ulysses.

Do their other albums mostly sound like this or is there a variety?

theres a bit of variety but i think this is their grandest album in terms of sound, i'd reccomend spleen and ideal after this one

Aion is also recommended, especially if you like some medieval influence.

Spleen is like a grittier pre-version of this, Serpent is a logical progression into more ethereal territory and Aion is a more renaissance-styled departure that I've never really clicked with but has some great moments

Not to hate on Brendan, but the last 5 tracks on this are just fucking transcendent. I love the first 3 too of course but that run from Xavier to the end is just godly.
