One of the first "metal" albums i heard, its also this band more consistent and best effort. While this over time gets tiresome (a curse of maybe all power metal), it really well crafted, imaginative, and really good.

I still check this from time to time, only Once can somehow challenge this as their best album, but its a tad inconsistent, so this one clearly has the edge.

Century Child is the best, but this (and Wishmaster) is solid

Love century child and once, they have killer tunes like the siren, ghost love score, beauty of the beast, slaying the dreamer, dead to the world, planet hell and bless the child, but they have some tracks which aren't spetacular and in their power metal era the instrumentation was better. Still their symphonic material is sick

Those songs are good and years ago they were for me intense as fuck, but compared to the rest were bland. Both Century and Once have the same quality, they have some of the greatest track in symphonic metal hsitory but they also have some filler.

"The pharaoh sails to orion, sleeping sun, walking in the air, gethsemane, passion and the opera are power metal classics"

Only Sleeping Sun is, nice try. Orion's male vox are all sorts of cringe.

Poet and the Pendulum to me is their best song by miles, fucking incredible and is the one time they deserve every single bit of praise this band ever got. I used to love this band (still have a T-shirt of them), but bands like After Forever, these, Epica, Tristania have not aged well for me at all for my past obcessions. By far Nightwish's biggest flaw is inconsistancy/being half assed so many times. They have amazing songs like Poet, The Islander, Wanderlust, Last of the Wilds, Sleeping Sun and Dark Chest of Wonders but so many times they have dull Metal element tacked on to their Symphonic grandeur and their songwriting sometimes feels so lacking in terms of structure and hooks. Feels like they can always do more but they just simply...don't.

Listening to The Poet and the Pendulum again....it makes me sad they simply refuse to write songs like this constantly. Their case of pacing, incredible transistions between each segement (I'm so pickey about these, they're essential to any Symphonic Metal/Power Metal album for me) and the interplay with the heavy side of Nightwish with their grandeur is amazing.
