I guess it’s just cuz the lil story of Suzanne is so gripping that it’s disappointing when he switches perspectives? And maybe there is a bit of dawkinsian eye-rolling whenever someone mentions Jesus in a song. Maybe

That is what I thought. It's an excellent written verse. Well, I went through that phase too so I can't blame you. You might get over it one day.

I'm not a christian but I don't roll my eyes when I hear the name Jesus or can't enjoy a piece of art because it makes use of religious symbolism like some 16 year old who just discovered Christopher Hitchens. That's corny

well his claim would be that rolling your eyes is the phase not not being a christian

I think I gave him too much leeway tho, lemme read the lyrics again and see

reading it it's a good verse that humanizes jesus which is cool with me but I think no matter what the perspectival switch breaks the spell a bit for me even though I can't really suggest an alternative. it could be "and george was a sailor" and i'd still be like Aww I miss suzanne. I guess. not really sure

But the verse ties back into Suzanne at the end. In fact, that's the whole point: To liken his connection to Suzanne to that of a religious experience, at least that is the way I interpret it.

song wouldn't have nearly the same impact if it didn't switch to the fable type thing in the second verse and then back to Suzanne in the third. it's like the whole point

idk maybe it really was the dawkins issue of just growing up going to church every week and learning so much about jesus that whenever I hear his name mentioned that experience sort of crowds out any aesthetic pleasure I might get out of anyone working the human-v-god tension/dynamic. not cohen's fault

easily my fav cohen song though, never found another i really liked

Well Cohen was quite religious. I'd imagine you would have your issues with a lot of his music then.

Been listening to Cohen and mwY for years and never connected the line from So Long, Marianne to the first mwY EP.

I seriously have to listen to more folk. Still haven't heard Dylan, Cohen, Drake, Smith, Microphones, Newsom

so much to jam!
