Lol no. I have so many fond memories of this but my word is some of it complete rubbish. Just listen to Pioneer, Heinrich, Lighthouse/Wrecking Ball and call it a day.

Bought this album ages ago. Now that my car has a cd-player, I thought I'd give it a spin again. The review captures my reaction well: "The simple guitar melodies, jumpy basslines, and robotic, always on the beat drumming all return and show no progression." I do not sense any emotional necessity behind the songs, with the exception of The Heinrich Maneuver that IMO carries the entire album. Interpol could go on mindlessly gurgling out records like this forever, which is exactly what they ended up doing.

This is interpol's 2nd best and it's not really even a competition tbh

Really not the drop off it was made to seem like it was back when it was released.

Agreed, this record is excellent! For me the real drop off came with the self titled

I don’t really get why this is rated lower than El Pintor

At the time this really was a painful level of "more of the same" and some of the songs were total ass. I don't think I ever threw on this CD without switching over to Bright Lights instead, at some point in the album, because why wouldn't you. This has aged very well though, probably deserves a higher avg and yeah it might be better than Antics.

I adore the opener "Pioneer to the Falls", it is truly mesmerizing. However, I have this problem that whenever Banks sings "But here comes the falls", I hear "But here comes the fart". It is a wtf moment each time.

so why the fuck is this considered lesser than antics lol. big indie band going on a label i guess? really great album and quite a bit of variety on here, especially in the back half. wrecking ball and lighthouse and really interesting tracks and lighthouse is an inspired closer. i don't get an overly commercial vibe here at all, maybe those complaints are mostly from people who were there at the time.
half incredible totbl quality songs and half very solid ones. pioneer, threesome, heinrich, pace and chemistry are all incredible. banks is just such an all time vocalist for me, love his style and swagger. as well as his poetic abstract lyricism. plus you get those gorgeous atmospheric leads and carlos d's iconic basslines. well oiled machine.
