Just got into this. I have to say I am surprised how little experimental and avantgarde it is musically. I mean the overall concept is and also the protruding song structures to a certain extent. But the parts of the songs are quite riffy straight forward black metal for the most part. And definitely great at that.
With it's concept, the overall atmosphere and parts like the prayers and choir parts like in carnal malefactor this kinda gave me 'name of the rose' vibes.. nicely eerie and gloomy!

It’s not my favorite album of theirs by a long shot but that is definitely my favorite dso track

Love this album but I think the reworked Drink The Devil's Blood is a little unnecesary.

Incredible album. Seminal and a cornerstone of the genre

This could be a 4.5 or maybe even a 5 down the line.
I'm wondering what role the length has in the average being lower than the next two albums, because barring Chaining the Katechon this could be my favorite DsO so far.

I think Fas is more concise and also just has a lot more going on. Paracletus on the whole is probably them at their most accessible aside from Long Defeat.
Carnal Malefactor is still their greatest achievement tho imo.

Fas is the best album of all time and it's a transcendental masterpiece, but this and Paracletus are still hard 5s and seminal black metal albums. GOAT band, period.

I think this runs a little long. Prolly fifth favorite DsO if we’re counting Drought and Kenose, shit maybe sixth. Might like Furnaces more.
Again tho I really cannot deny Carnal Malefactor. Straight up one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

Fas is a very strong album but felt a little cluttered to me on the first few goes - I'm hoping it clicks like this, Paracletus, and Drought have

I'll always remember you (Dylan) as the guy who loves A Forest of Stars's debut as much as me haha. That album is another underappreciated masterpiece

Fas is just so fucking dense man. It’s lean at like 47 mins but they fit so much fucking noise and ideas into it and it’s absolutely unhinged in the best way possible. If you can appreciate the rest of their shit you’ll definitely get around to digging it too.

Frost you sadly have me confused for someone else :-( I have no memory of listening to that album! It sounds interesting though, so I'll definitely be sure to check it out asap. That said I have heard "Premature Invocation" from their 2018 album and it's a really great tune. And I recall you from the Paracletus thread where you shared your story about your first listen to Fas. It was a really great illustration of just how impactful a first listen can be. It also made me jealous that my own first listens to Fas weren't as revelatory lol (though my 3.5 for that album is probably too low)
And cheers Wildcard - I've been loving this band over the past couple months

Dang Dylan! It wasn't you, you're right. I can't recall which one but I'm pretty sure you had an album 5ed that few people had 5ed and I loved it
