'you could if you had the guts and the creativity. you don't'
Come on now, personal musical ability is not necessary to critiquing pieces - particularly ones that contain... no real musical prowess.

As for guts, it was certainly brave of Lou Reed to do what he did here. As for creativity, I understand the content here may have been quite unheard of, considering the year the album was released. But it'd be better to expand upon it rather than put out one hour of nothing but feedback.

@MercuryToHell His critique was all about him being able to make a better album so

@danielcardoso Of course it could have been expanded upon. Just listen to Sonic Youth, or Swans, or whatever. The point is there probably would be no Swans and no SY without MMM. Besides if he made it more song-like and accessible it would lose it's fuck you value, which is a big part of its artfulness. Art doesn't have to be enjoyable (in the traditional sense) you know.

Cheerfully withdrawn - didn't read the chain of comments in complete truth.
My bad.

To clarify, I didn't mean the genre wouldn't be expanded upon. I'd be foolish if I said that, because just looking at the bands you namechecked would prove me wrong. I meant it'd be nice for Lou himself to carve out more than just one hour of feedback played at different tempos. Though you make a valid point yourself, and I know very well art isn't always enjoyable in the conventional meaning of the word.

Yeah it lacks the compositional posturing and the visceral/cathartic emotions that are so integral to noise genres now but this has more melody and is much more accessible. I find it utterly mesmerizing just the same tbh.

The only CD I own right now is this one bc whenever the radio refuse to play decent pop songs I think "I'd much rather listen to feedback noise" but then "oh wait! I have metal machine music CD!" :D

I think the problem with this album is that it's so bad compared to his best work. Any other artist and this would probably be around 3-3.5 territory. But as this is so much lesser than his other work it just feels so awful.
