I actually bought the disc when it first came out and I was so pissed
|

ouch, the last DT album I actually paid for was train of thought, knew after that they'd just be rehashing

ToT is decent but even that is overrated I think. Some great riffs and ideas, but overall, songs were extended longer than they needed to be and Labrie's vocals straddle the dick.

Well they're Metallic Prog now and it seems to me as if they are out on mission to prove they're
capable of creating bad-ass METAALLLL albums even though they've reached the mid life crisis age. Its
sad, so much talent being wasted on generic music. Jordan I feel is the most dynamic and talented of
the bunch. You just need to check his youtube channel to realise how much of his talent is not being
used on DT albums. Want to please the fans more than write what they want? I never used to think so,
but sadly I think that's the way the cookies crumbling.
Oh well there are millions of other bands to choose from right.

Black Clouds and Silver Linings is actually a pretty good album imo (much better than this) despite Portnoy's growls, which are terrible.

But he formed DT! . Aaahh whatever. What direction do you reckon the next album will take? It has to be different, but why do I have the feeling that they'll take the safe route and rehash yet again. Damn the positive response to adtoe
|
| |
Hmm not sure. Hopefully Mike Mangini will have a bigger role this time and actually play his own drum parts. I also hope they cut back on the ballads, which were mostly terrible on ADTOE.

Since they're 'progressive' they have to show their softer side. Which apparently can't be done in the heavier songs, so we need separate cheesy as hell ballads. They weren't too bad in adtoe but I don't like the concept of the ballad, too cheesy imo. Even though ironically I think I've enjoyed the majority of the ballads. It's the mindset that 'allows' them to cater to their heavier side on the remaining songs.
Yeah it'll be interesting to see how much Mangini contributes, though I think he's been a session musician in most of the albums he's played on, without contributing to the songwriting.

True. I'd like to see LaBrie do something as interesting as Images and Words again.

It doesn't have to be high pitched vocals. Just any experimentation. He's got a great low register emotive voice. He can use that even during aggressive sections, the contrast will make it interesting. I mean there are so many ways to experiment. Also the music should adhere to the lyrical theme. For instance 'Outry' was about the Middle East uprisings, they could've included native instruments like the 'Oud'. When was the last time JP played an acoustic guitar solo? When was the last time Jordan used the Rhodes piano? The beauty of progressive music is that there are no boundaries, unless you set them for yourselves.
No, the music has to have excessive 'riffs' because its METAL! I don't know why but it seems they'll just continue the way they're going, en route to embody perfect mediocrity.
Well that's gone long enough.

@OmairSh, lol ,the second half is kinda funny when you picture Mike Portnoy's alcoholic soul being exorcised out of him
