"This is sth else imo. Perhaps you meant technical/complex."
...no I do fine with tech metal just not modern stuff thanks.
And im pretty sure these guys get frequently cited for having neoclassical/classically influenced Death Metal riffs alongside Necophagist. and I dont like Yngwie either.
"Bet they're better than Gorguts at least"
nah Spawn of Possession arent better than Gorguts, unless you mean Mindly Rotten in which case Idk never listened to em but I highly doubt theyd be better than Gorguts.

the neoclassical influence on SOP is in the composition (particularly baroque) - not neoclassical shred like yjm/necro
these songs are basically written as string quartets with guitars
it's pretty obvious on songs like sour flow

While on Incurso they are already beginning to sound like an entire orchestra

lmao at me from 2020, good ol' SlicePaperMoog days. Yeah I still fuckin detest this type of shit but I do on some level get that there is differences between how each band goes about the classical edge.

Old comment but I think this kind of explains a bit on why Rising Force has grown on me by a little bit (still not the biggest fan) after the years whereas this still irritates the living hell out of me. I've always hated how rigid and tight the compositions on a lot of classically influenced stuff, something about it comes across very "stagnant" or "static" feeling if that makes any sense. Rising Force a lot of people say is badly structured but I kinda like the fact that it's songs are "badly structured" because even with all the classical noodling it gives the songs a more sporadic and improvisational feel to it. Like there's less freedom to the technicality of a band like Spawn of Possession (I still hate Necrophagist too, find them even more unbearable than SoP tbh).
I'm just too much of a Punk brat and Jazz snob rolled up into one human being to have any significant amount of appreciation to this kind of stuff. I want the Zappa-isms and McLaughlin-isms of Tim Smith and Tom Verlaine or the Holdsworth-isms of Ron Jarzombek and Chris Poland.
