the songwriting is ridiculously gimmicky, the production while par for the music oddly ends up detracting from the atmosphere, and the whole thing just comes off as forced.

You are aware that 3.5 is a pretty good rating, right? I'm trying to be objective with my rating here.

@redskyformiles, explain what you mean by "gimmicky"

Yes I know it's a good rating, but not good enough. I'm just messing around anyways. And Redsky I don't think the production takes away from the atmosphere at all. I think it helps it tbh.

let me rephrase that: there are too many wtf moments in every song where they try to shoot for a certain sound or effect and they fail -- making me either want to turn off the album, laugh, or both.

I never get that feeling. I think everything falls into place perfectly. But hey, that's just my opinion and I respect yours.

I've just recently gotten into The Mantle a lot. I've always like it, but now I'm liking it a whole lot more. As for Ashes, it's extremely close for me between that and this. I like the overall atmosphere of this album more though so it puts it over the top for me.

Guys, all Agalloch is a 4 at the least, why do I see 2.5 and 3.5's? Mantle is awesome, particularly A Desolation Song.

The Mantle is very, very close to surpassing this album in my eyes. And that's funny because I hold this album amazingly high, and I used to think The Mantle was their weakest.

I've had The Mantle for years and it still kinda bores me at points.. I think I have it at a 3.5. This and Ashes are fantastic listens though.
