I'm not a Mastodon aficionado, I had only really known Blood Mountain before I decided to check this one (and now I actually dig everything) so maybe I don't ~get~ it but I don't understand the negative reception for this album at all. I find a lot of meat here, and an interesting balance between a song like Show Yourself and heavy cuts like Scorpion Breath and Andromeda

I like this one...but what made my high rating was to acknowledge how personal this was for the band and therefore i found the lyrics pretty intense. The cancer subject and the band members walk-through made me pay more attention to it. I can understand your points of view though.
