I don't listen to much prog rock but I like the band Can because they have balls and kind of seem crazy. Their stuff isn't all polished. Which adds to it. This record needs more of that style. This seems almost like 'planned randomness' which is a weird thing to listen to. So basically it seems very contrived. Which is one of my main complaints about it.

"there's been blues, jazz, and folk on the last couple records too."

Ehhhhh kind of, and when they are there they are not fused into the songs in an interesting way or a way which makes it their own.

;) none taken buddy, it's always an interesting aha moment when you discover another band has stolen a riff or when an influence is worn on their sleeve for all to see. It's like watching B horror movies and discovering clips from your favorite death metal albums. I don't give a rip that Opeth blatantly stole a Camel riff. Still Life is one of my favorite albums ever written.

Aha my bad dude

And yeah just to elaborate on my original point: the newer Opeth songs sound like Camel(or insert whatever 70s prog rock) songs. So while they still may be mixing in other styles in the way that those bands were, it still sounds like they are ripping them off because now they do not have those extra ingrediants. Pre-Heritage Opeth sounded like they captured their own unique sound in part because the 70s prog, death metal and the blues/jazz/folk sections were combined in such a way that was a bit more original.

Also how the songs are arranged are entirely different, but not in a way that makes it more interesting - they're now arranged like 70s prog rock bands that they like lol

I think it's a fair argument that their songwriting has drastically become less cohesive and interesting, and now more just thrown together. It's like they reverted back to Orchid somehow (which I love, but let's be honest is just a collection of riffs)

Yeah Orchid is a mess but even that was way more fun

still don't understand how anyone could say the songwriting here is less structured when this is the simplest, most straightforward album they've done. the title track, for example, uses a pretty traditional song structure.

But there are song parts coming out of nowhere and the opening keyboard part of the t/t for instance is completely forgotten by that song once it's over and thw riff comes in

I agree that it's definitely structured but it's almost like it's structured in a way that it's supposed to sound unstructured. It seems very contrived.

I think it's a legitimate complaint so. I mean, no reason to go overboard about it but yeah. Also I'm pretty sure English isn't your first language. I'm not sure, though.

No, english is not my first language and I can't express myself correctly when I'm angry or nervous.

Dominion stop pretending like you enjoy this. You're in a space place now. It's okay. If you give this a 1, I will follow you.

Nice rating dude. Yeah this actually seems very structured in a try-hard way but still manages to come across as occasionally scattergun. For the most part it’s just boring though.

Hm, on the first two albums, yes, but I wouldn't really defend the song-writing on those for the most part. After those the songs at the very least had a fitting mood and flow in the clear majority of the cases. I buyed into the development of Master's Apprentice from a death metal song into the soft parts of its final third because the feeling of the song was still maintained. On Sorceress however, there is the aforementioned casino like opening followed by some stoner rock riff, just what does that song want to express now? Does it want to be quirky or serious? I mean, it can be both at the same time, but flopping around like that just hinders the song from building up any form of cohensive emotion that could get to me. I don't find things like that on albums like Ghost Reveries or Still Life. Now, if we're talking about Black Rose Immortal and stuff, that's a whole different thing, admittedly.
