"pumped to check out their two previous, never did before."
You're in for a treat. One of the best to ever tech imo, with a really strong discog. Noctambulant slaps particularly hard.
On a slightly related note, have you tried jamming ̶H̶e̶l̶c̶a̶r̶a̶x̶e̶ Anata?

Some of the catchiest tech around. Last two albs are chef's kiss. Not really comparable to SoP, but they always come to mind when I think of that era.

sweet man, will add to the list. tech death is something i just grow to appreciate more and more each passing year. it's just fun to listen to riff candy with variety and skill.

Lot of metalheads are allergic to tech death but there’s a ton of amazing bands. I’ll post a list if ya want some of my faves

Maybe I’ll just make an actual list

yeah i've really never understood the bad rep the genre has. sure there are some bands that are turbo wank with no songwriting but there's so much good stuff.
and go for it man, i'd give it a look for sure!

Would love to see that list. High-key hoping it won't just be the usual suspects plus one or two dark horse picks.

There is a lot of boring tech death for sure but these boys and Anata aren't among it.
Retromorphosis made me respin this and the other SoP albums several times, they've lost nothing of their splendor. Simply awe-inspiring music.

Theory in Practice is another sick tech death band from Sweden. Anyone who hasn't heard "The Armageddon Theories" should check asap
