well just because a band goes pop doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be complete shit.

I give it the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah some of my favorite albums by some bands are albums that fans consider them "going pop"

But by the snippets shown, this is incredibly unpromising, especially knowing LP are hit or miss with full on pop songs

MTM is still by and large pretty solid. And nah, their heavier stuff has always been over the top melodramatic and annoying

Yeah, the new album will probably sound as contrived as THP did.

I've said it a million times, but the band is at its strongest when they're using more electronics in their music. It's always felt like a good progression for the band. After the M2M misfire, the two that proceed it just feel like a nice sweet spot for the band to sit in. Plus, the concept surrounding this album make it even stronger.

"After the M2M misfire"

Actually this album was their misfire, M2M was a wonderful album.

I wouldn't go as far to say that M2M was a misfire, but it was a drastic and unexpected style shift to a very safe sound; they executed the sound well enough, but people were always going to be pissy about the style shift.

saying this was a misfire is silly unless you're willing to back it with an argument

I'm all for style changes with bands -- hell, I advocate it fully, if it's done right.

M2M has a couple of good moments, but is far too generic and bland. Although, I still think it's better than THP.

No I would agree, nice to see a band shift things up. It was more pointing out that the drastic shift that occurred on M2M and the fact that it was towards a style many fans seemed to be hostile towards was what, I believe, led to the backlash against it.

What about THP rubs you the wrong way? I love that album

It's just a cringefest from start to finish; productions horrible, Keys to the Kingdom literally sounds like it was recorded with a recording pen, and the whole thing just reeks of them trying to be something they aren't. All for Nothing is the only song I can stomach from it.

It's like if the rumour the new album is going to be a pop album, I just don't think it'll work. It'll come out forced as fuck.

This band spends more time trying to be "different", than making music they actually like, and it all just comes out desperate to me.

Some people don't like LT, but that album was a legit, natural progression on what they'd built with AS and everything else previous and it worked well for them.

Thats fair enough. I'd agree with you on the production, but not on trying to be something they aren't. Given the frequency with which they have shifted style I wouldn't be able to pin down what they are or what is forced and what isn't; they've always very openly admitted in interviews that they shift sounds and blend different styles as and when the mood takes them, that being the point of the band for them (Chester noting their first album was called Hybrid Theory for a reason).

Re-listening it now though and its a fair bit worse than I remember, which is a shame

Also, I'd agree that LT was a natural progression, but I hated that album for the most part; it had some gems amongst the rough, but the bulk of that was not for me

damn, I've gone back to LT and loved it, and gone back to THP and enjoyed it less than I remembered. That'll teach me not to have a discussion about albums I haven't heard in years
