"Semi-Charmed Life" was a massive hit and still gets airplay to this day so I'm not surprised in the least

Semi-Charmed is ok but it's insanely overplayed which has ruined any enjoyment I might have gained from it.

Idk, I just don't really enjoy this brand of hook-oriented alt rock. It's pretty good for a radio rock album but I don't see what makes this so special. Regardless, though, I'm happy for all of you who do love it.

I feel like I need to make a list asking for good Pop Rock recs. Like I genuinely think the idea of a pop rock album, especially a depressing one if one exists, sounds awesome but so far this seems kind of lame : /

if you don't like this pop rock album you won't like any because this is the best one by far

@Boney: Might be because I'd started to gradually wean myself away from the radio by the time I first checked this (and because I somehow had largely managed to avoid hearing it on the radio) but the airplay of "Semi-Charmed Life" never bothered me tbh. What bothers me more is that the radio version bites a chunk out of the bridge, which is my favorite part of the song, but I digress.

For me, much of the appeal in this album is in the hooks, the overall vibe/guitar sound, nostalgia, and most of all, the lyrics. I find the last three songs to be especially strong lyrically. At least you dug "Motorcycle Drive By," and respect for giving this a fair shot.

I actually liked Thanks A Lot quite a bit too ALA

The hour runtime is a bit much I have to point out - if I'm going to go for something like this I'd prefer something in the range of 35-45 minutes. 58 is pushing my patience.

Dylan, the hooks don't really appeal to me, the guitar sound is fine but fairly standard for the time I'd say, for obvious reasons I can't relate to the nostalgia aspect, and though I didn't pay attention to the lyrics what I heard didn't impress me a whole ton.

I mean overall it's pretty solid, I can tell it's well enough made for what it is, but what it is just isn't really my thing.

Fair enough dude, different strokes for different folks. The world would be a boring place if everyone agreed about everything.

the guitar sound is fine but fairly standard for the time I'd say[2]

I don't get what you mean by the guitar having like it's own vibe or something about it being a stand out, it's fairly standard, and not in the cool late-Nirvana kind of way, in the "every 90's band" kind of way.

The lyrics range from kind of cringe to slightly above average. The song about a kid committing suicide didn't do nearly enough for me. I can understand what you mean by this representing the 90's. The guitars remind me of alt rock/grunge and sometimes the interludes even give me an Oasis tinge, the vocals also occasionally remind me of some early RHCP from the 90's and Oasis, not to the same extent obviously it's just a slight tinge, but it's there.

Then again I'm probably the only one hearing a tad oasis or rchp in some of the delivery. It's a stretch.

I didn't say that the vibe was unique to this record, I just said that I liked the overall feel of the album and that the guitar tone plays a crucial role in that - summery, nostalgic, etc.

"lyrics ... slightly above average" - quick question, how far into the album are you right now?

Summery? I can see that. Nice imagery.

I'm almost on the Motorcycle song

Thanks man, this is usually one of the first albums I jam at the onset of warmer, sunnier weather for that reason.

I can understand finding the first 11 tracks to be a bit ho-hum lyrically (even though I disagree), but as I've already said, I find the last three tracks to be stunning in that regard. To each their own, though.

The song about suicide just didn't effect me at all even though that's one of the most sensitive and obvious heart clenches you can write about : /

The Motorcycle track was pretty good ... I guess ...

"Jumper" takes a bit of a weird approach considering its subject matter, I can understand disliking it and would probably myself rank it as one of the weaker tracks here.

"God of Wine" is an excellent choice for top track, but as for "Motorcycle"... eh, maybe give it a bit more time, that song did have to grow on me

Motorcycle God of Wine and Thanks a lot were definitely top 3
