" sell it the kids self-hate"
that's exactly what I think it is at times lol. but it's still enjoyable musically and there are songs that are sweet lyrically too

Nah it's always had a bit more depth, if anything it's yank take it too seriously 'I've had 3 beers for lunch im obviously chronic alcoholic' self-hate.

It's been a good 15 years since i've given this a proper spin but damn, I just looked at that tracklist and was reminded how good and groundbreaking this shit was back in the 90's. Gonna have to jam this soon.

gimmicky angst

There's nothing profound going on here though, it's a straight up blast of early '90s industrial/goth that hit a nerve.
It's a classic.

"You can have my isolation you can have the hate that it brings"
Listening to that back in the day was proper. Like I keep saying the real deal has been diluted by a billion bullshiters that have come since..
When NIN did Woodstock '94 coverd in mud having been in with the crowd living it, the image conveyed more than words ever could.

This is so goddamn mediocre, how are y'all so impressed? The industrial aspects are so shallow at best (like borderline all industrial rock/metal), and the likes of brand new does whiny, overblown, angst more convincingly.

Closer is amusing tho

In what way is this really all that fun tho?
It's just another way overhyped, subpar alt rock under the guise of something ~more~ but adding some clinks and clanks and bleeps to legitimize it as "industrial". Add some stock "controversial" and wangsty lyrics, and you're good to go!
