I have a legitimate question: Do people actually this is good? Or is it more of like a "so bad its so good so we'll give it high ratings" type album?
This is like... horrible to listen to. Bannon's style is absolutely horrifying to listen to. How in the hell did people come to praise him?
Phoenix in Flight is probably the only real listenable song on this album. Heaven in Your arms has always been funny to listen to because it shows signs of instrumental talent from the surrounding cast, but Bannon basically ruins it because hes squawking like a chicken the whole song.

Yeah you figured it out, it’s all a giant in-joke and we all just like it ironically

I love the majority of Converge's discography.
Your reaction is not unusual for first time listeners of this album/band. I also hated this and didn't get it the first time I heard it. The best way I can describe it is that it needs to click, and then you suddenly start seeing what the deal is, if it ever happens. For me, Converge went from being annoying, unintelligible noise to one of my favourite if not my favourite band of all time. For some people it helps to start on their more recent albums (which are more accessible than this in many ways) and work their way backwards.
Part of the appeal of Bannon's vocals is the abrasiveness of them. He puts a lot of emotion into it and once you start getting it you wouldn't want them to be any other way.

I mean I've listened to this album numerous times over the years thinking I'm missing something, but it just sounds horrible every time I come back to it. It sounds like Bannon is squawking into the mic this whole album with absolutely no technique behind it. My favorite vocalists (Jimmy Ryan, Dan Weyandt) have pretty abrasive styles, but Bannon is just unlistenable to on this album.
I can't speak for their whole discography, so I'm just specifically talking this album. I've heard a few of their newer songs, specifically A Single Tear, and its far better than anything on this album. Bannon does a great job and the instrumentals are excellent as well, as it sounds like there is structure to the song unlike noise as is the case with this album.
I've just never understood why THIS was the album to hit it big in the music industry.

Find Axe To Fall and All We Love to be a better gateways than this. Production is more modern, and bannon sounds like he's getting over his strep throat.
Keep at it though, when it clicks it clicks.

Lmao @ the fact that ACTUAL, rhythmless noise music exists and you can pretty easily hear Converge tightly playing riffs and clear cut sections of songs for this entire album. It might be distorted and off kilter at times but the songs seem so legible to me.
The fact that "unintelligible noise" gets thrown around completely baffles me. It's pretty damn heavy, but there's for sure stuff way more gross than this. I mean yeah it's fairly chaotic at times but still, you call follow it. Granted, in high school, Axe and All We Love were the first Converge records I really got into, but that's just cause I wanted to listen to their newest stuff and I thought all music recorded before 2005 sounded too old. Haha
Furthermore, this and YFM are my fav vocal performances of Jake's. His scream is one of the most caustic and brutal vocals in heavy music. He sounds like a fucking barking demon and it's pulverizing in the best way. I'd hate to hear anything else on these songs.

ya this is easily his best vocal performance

Well it’s clearly not unintelligible noise, but it probably comes across that way to people who listen to this with little-to-no background in any mathcore after hearing all the praises sung about it. That’s how it came across to me at least when I first listened

I knew it'd be a poor caricature of their sound. Legitimately almost no similarities even. It's like hearing someone speak German after they just said they were going to speak English. But it's also quite the undertaking to be nuanced about copying a band that you hate in the first place. The things that make this band good to me and others aren't represented here, and I wouldn't expect them to be cause you don't see them. The part at 1:11 - 1:27 was actually pretty neat though, you could get a song going with that idea as a verse.
"nah even some grind dudes back in the day were like 'what is he saying?'"
lmao Really? Cause we all go to grindcore so we can hear the lyrics clearly.
