Dark Tranquillity these days isn't all that captivating... kind of a far cry from their first form, and their second. This mood/atmosphere driven third phase of DT isn't as fun imo

Yeah, In Flames was always the least remarkable of the Gothenburg bands, even during the '90s.

I still love all of their stuff through Colony. But DT and ATG has far more adventurous and interesting songwriting by comparison

nah 90's IF was better. Lunar Strain, Subterranean, Jester Race + Black Ash were better than DT's early-mid 90's output overall imo
it's only after Clayman/Haven that DT really pulled ahead

I’ve gotta disagree, as much as I love IF’s early work I think DT was compositionally much more interesting with their more neo-classical approach to melodeath. Just my humble opinion of course

i feel that. i mean IF did have that going on in Lunar Strain, but i personally dig straightforward melodeath more which i think IF did better

Yea Lunar Strain is rad. Not quite as developed as what DT was doing but it brings the riffs for sure. Their pre-Anders work doesn’t get enough credit

Although there won’t ever be an album like The Jester Race, great melodies and a dream-like quality to it that’s still pretty unique
