it's the closer. quite a plain way to go out

Probably a return to simplicity after a busier-than-usual album for them.

This album is getting shorter and shorter - you're saying I now have to trim the first and last track off my edited version?
National closers are usually understated and it's 50/50 if they end up a highlight. Seems a strange choice of single and I'm hoping the song acquires more emotional weight from following something stronger.
I'm really anticipating this new album now, I don't know which way it will go - but anything less than a 4/5 rating will go down as a Doof diss considering this is the National

the national peaked with trouble will find me and then took a nosedive with this album. it isn't a bad album and has a few pretty good songs, but listening to it in full is a chore. their songwriting is becoming more streamlined and monotonous.

Matt is losing his way with a phrase AND a melody - at. the. same. time.
This is not good, indeed this could be fatal.
This album rode it out based on other factors but long term prognosis looks bleak.

I don't know why people are bothered by the prospect of a new National album being bad. Their discography is too polished, I actually think it's better for their legacy if they have a 'red-headed stepchild' record. It's their shortest album release gap, can't we give them a break?

it's not a huge deal if the album ends up being mediocre (i think this one is borderline mediocre after all), but no, i wouldn't say it's beneficial to their legacy to release a shit album lol.

I'd love it if they'd had released an album where at least 50% was in the style of the title track from this one - that would have been a real challenge for them but the result could have been amazing or amazingly terrible
So far the two new songs are: track 1 (misguided and unlistenable imo) and track 2 (pretty safe)

I feel this was already a step in the wrong direction so my expectations for the new one weren't sky high anyway, although I was definitely optimistic due to the quality they've produced previously.

Luci, I agree with you in theory but I’m selfish, they’re my favorite band oat and I want them to stay perfect.

This one was Matt's worst album since the debut. He's at close to top form on the t/t, 'System' and a couple of others - a lot of the rest of the time he's unmemorable by his own very high standards. He's not THAT much better here than his performance on the EL VY, and he couldn't lift that project to anything close to an essential level.
Sadly this is the album I turn to 'despite Matt' as opposed to 'mostly because of Matt' (esp true of TWFM, his finest hour imo)
Luckily the Dessner's did some interesting things and the overall package was still high quality (despite a slightly 'off' middle section of the album)

I think for an album to be un-1'able its average has to be exactly 4.3 or higher - meaning an album with an average of, say, 4.29 can still be rated 1 or 1.5
