What physical properties of picks do you think are most important?

The thickness, the shape of the tip, the overall size of the pick, the grip of the pick, literally everything. I'm not even talking about tone, because that's a whole different story. I am talking about sheer technique and your ability to play.

If we are talking about tone, I have no idea how people fuss over strings and woods and all this other stuff while overlooking the thing they're literally holding in their other fuckin hand.

Picks are important yeah

Bought a pack of those James Hetfield signature picks when I was 10 because FUCKING METALLICA DUDE and could barely fucking grip it. Still have trouble playing with them without dropping it every two minutes.

My dad uses something kind of similar to those gator grips that dom mentioned... so much easier to use

Damn, noted. Explains a lot about the free picks I got when I was a kid. Thought they were just undersized but a lot of other factors like flexibility, thickness, and grip could account for why they really don't seem to last very long.

pro tip: take a razor and cut a giant x on each side of the pick. helps with the grip a bit.

Yep scar that shit up. Or drill a small hole into where your fingers would be, but make sure you don't sacrifice the strength of the pick by doing so.

Regarding thickness, I think 1.5 mm is now my standard. Tried everything from 0.96 to 3 mm, and I think 1.5 mm is the winner.

Don't think I have a drill bit that small, but maybe I could use a nail or something. Cheers man

Don't use a nail, the pick will get fucked if you miss or don't get it through with one hit. If no drill bit, just go with the scarring. Make that thing look like Seal.

My old bass player used to glue his pick to his fingers, he would legit just rip it off.

He was a weird dude, drinking all the time and into crazy antics and self mutilation. I just eventually stopped going to band practice haha
