The last 4 songs on Alligator is the best stretch of songs they've every put to tape, but that record as a whole is mostly awful.

Quite simply I don't relate to a lot of that record. A lot of the charm of Alligator is people using it to vicariously relive their late teens. It's a complete nostalgia record. I don't necessarily look back fondly on that time of my life so with the exception of a few tracks there's a huge disconnect between the feel good freneticism and my own experience. Adding to that, I really don't like the production on that record at all, especially how the vocals sound. There's no depth to Matt's vocals and it actually irritates me to no end how flat it all sounds. It kind of works on Mr. November and Abel because those are much more energetic tracks but for the most part, I find most of that record to be an unlistenable wash of bad mixing and way too much treble.

Hard to compare the production on Boxer and on Aligator. Boxers production is ace!
