How does it come across as janky pastiche? These guys clearly have a lot of love for the music of that era (enough to go out of their way to invite Tangerine Dream along to participate), but enough musical integrity and skill to mold it to their own unique style. When I listen to this I don't hear PF as much as I hear love for that band being interwoven into their own brand of dm. I think they thread that balance perfectly and that the end result comes across as both genuine and above mere pastiche. But to each their own I suppose.
Do you have any recs for similar albums btw?

As for the dm riffs I'm not sure what you find is lacking? They're complex at times, simple at other times, dynamically varied between noodly proghy and bouncy chuggy. What is missing in your opinion because I'm not hearing it.

Never said it wasn't earnest or loving - doesn't come off that way at all, just a devil may care stapling of one thing they're into to another. Which is fine, kinda endearing how little they wanted to tamper with the originals, but I don't feel that this ever rises above the sum of its parts
Not at all a one for one similarity, but the style of composition here reminds me a little of Bath/Leaving Your Body Map in its slapdash one thing after another effect - and even then, I think motW's overarching concept and relatively distinctive take on their metal influences (Tiamat, MDB) shows this thing up for the face-value spectacle it is

Fair enough johnny. I do think it becomes more than the sum of its parts personally, but we hear it differently ig. As for that criticism, I'm kinda with the other poster on last page about that not being a great whipping stick to hold against the majority of releases. I don't believe the intention here ever was to be overly inventive and that is fine. Most music isn't tbh and that isn't necessarily a pre-requisite for greatness imo.
Tastes shmates et al I guess. Personally it tickles all kinds of fancies for me, but we're all different etc
Cheers for the comparisons btw, will have to check. Haven't listened to Tiamat so will do.

One thing I appreciate about this site is that there are a handful of people (johnny for sure) whose fund of music knowledge and music history is so vast that they seem to approach albums from a scholarly angle. This site's filled with music buffs that take music as it is and as it comes and then there are others who put music in context of a broader overarching context.
As long as that scholarly approach isn't accompanied by a holier-than-thou "I know more than you" attitude then I can appreciate the education.

I don’t care about the Pink Floyd shit I just think the riffs are a bit watered down compared to previous albums and I would’ve liked if they expanded more on the prog electronic elements rather than the psych rock. Not a bad album but my least favorite that they’ve done so far

The riffs overall feel like they’ve shifted towards a more cinematic vibe in order to evoke an emotional response rather than the more technical style of the previous ones, and that’s fine but it’s just not my vibe as much. It makes sense that it resonates with a lot more people

Yeah that's true, the riffs are generally a little simpler on this one compated to their other albums. They still have some complex riffs in odd time signatures though so it isn't all dumbed down for cinematic effect either, but it's a valid observation. I think they've struck a nice balance here between techier erratic bits with the more straight forward layman-like riffs. Makes both styles of writing elevate one another more if you will. Silence makes the noise pop more kinda thing. This is generally hard to achieve effectively imo which is what really struck me with this album. Fantastic musicians and can't wait to catch them live in april!

"janky pastiche / devil may care stapling", "emotional response", "cinematic vibe", riffs not as interesting etc. (2)
I have a deeper dissection of this buried in these 87 pages of constant back-and-forth somewhere, but that just about sums up my overall feelings here
I can see why this resonates with people or why it's 'fun'. It kinda is despite my reservations

Happy when it's on. Happy when it's off. Sad when I turn on a different album that sounds like it.
