caught SOAD's stadium show in London last night. shockingly wild gig. i mean, the band themselves were OK - sounded good but not a lot of energy or showmanship, def just touring for the moolah, but the crowd was totally apeshit. entire stadium standing felt like one big pit from the opening track to the last. people still really fucking love this band despite how long its been

They put on a great show last summer when I saw them! I thought it was better than when I caught them in 2011 or so. Serj actually seemed a lot more invested this last time which was nice.

The nostalgic rock/metal circuit is crazy...bands who were like 7 out of 10 at the time, like SOAD, are friggin' huge now.



Is that unfair? Is that just my opinion?



Not really, at the height of their power in 2001 they were still usually only third or fourth on a metal festival roster.



Now it's just a case the bigger bands at the time are mostly dead and very little has come after with a similar broad appeal.



It's a really strange phenomenon, especially when 1. I caught them live twice in the 2000s and they weren't great showmen and 2. you are saying now they're just running through the hits for the money.



The fans love it, and I nearly got a ticket as two of my buddies went, so no issue with it but it's strange when you lived through it.

I think you nailed it that it's partially because it was the last time there was anything resembling a monoculture in music, and maybe Zoomers are feeling left out now that everything is so hyper-individualized thanks to the internet and algorithms. For older fans there's always nostalgia.



I will say though that even back then System was a 10/10 band for me, and even though I'm not as gung-ho about them now I still love them.

I think the massive absences, time apart, and ending their studio career in their prime did a lot to add to SOAD's lasting popularity. They didnt stick around long enough to produce duff albums for people to get tired of them. Going out in the prime leaves people wanting more.

Coming through RATM and FNM, where both bands I caught live a few times and they were excellent and really intense live, I just never thought SOAD were that unique or good live.



Don't get me wrong they have maybe 8 bangers but if you'd said to me back then that in 2026 they'd be headlining huge stadiums in the UK I'd have thought you'd lost it!

To balance that out a bit...I only ever caught SOAD at festivals and in the daylight whereas FNM and RATM I caught headlining festivals and in indoor shows.



A daytime festival performance can be unforgiving.
