"Mikael fired him because Johan wanted more bass driven songs. At this point, I started to lose all respect for Akerfeldt not only as a person, but as a musican respectively."

It's hard to have respect for a lot of Swedish metal bands after a certain point, I find. DeFarfalla's departure was unfortunate and why they never kept him around when he was clearly one of the most talented musicians in the band and easily fit Akerfeldt's ambitions is beyond me.

Mike has always had a very specific vision for the band, he knows exactly what he wants each song to sound like. I guess Johan wanted a bit more control than Mike was willing to give.

Come on, Thrust. He's a top-notch player but best in the genre? We never really got to see him evolve.

I would have loved him to stay on, he brought a slight psych sound they really wouldn't explore until later on.
But I think you're being a bit dramatic.

Guys like Sullivan and Keyser deserve way more credit than they actually get.

I don't think he's very subtle, someone like Mendez is. Johan brought a showmanship to the bass playing that Mendez, while also a fantastic player, doesn't really do. I think that's why Mike has stuck with Mendez, he's technical but extremely subtle when he needs to be; Johan was too visible and loud for Mike

I'll probably give Morningrise another go later on. I do think this album was a bit bloated and that they could have improved upon it further with DeFarfalla but I'll see if it holds up better after not having heard it for a while.

That's honestly kind of what I missed from Opeth around albums like Blackwater Park where much of the album seemed one-note.

"Do you know what key changes in correlation with same key measures in 2 measures per bar are?"

No, why?

The best part of the song is 5:00 to 7:00, about as trippy as they ever got during this era

True that. You see where you've come from and how you are different but also how you have remained the same.

Always figured Black Rose Immortal was kind of disjointed. Especially around the middle from what I recall.

A lot of Sweden's more prominent bands kind of went down the drain quality-wise.

This contains one of my fav riffs by these guys. Basically the whole mellow section on night and the silent water from 2:50 onwards, so simple but it works so well.
Their mellow sections earlier on were more serene, I love their later mellow sections but they lacked the idyllic feeling I'd get from hearing those plucked octaves like this.

Yeah, mellow sections on this and other older Opeth rule so hard. I like the mellotron-driven newer moments but this never gets old.
