Just rewatched the music video for After the Party. God I hope they can hit that level again on the new album. That song is better than most of OTIP honestly

more pop oriented structures with too much emphasis on choruses.
they're good choruses tho

haven't they always been focused on choruses? obituaries, gates, sun hotel, casey...these songs are iconic straight up because of their choruses
|
| |
yea but i guess you could say the structuring and arrangements were less formulaic in those days or had better non-chorus parts or something. havent thought about it too much myself but these new tracks are definitely feelin a bit more unoriginal than their best stuff, even though i still like these new tracks

agreed. that first verse in burn after writing is perfect, along with the final minute of in remission, etc.
But then in the new stuff you have the intro to tellin lies which is simple but hype as fuck, black mass is incredible and not very formulaic, even the bars is totally driven by the back half of the song. but yeah, the two new songs have not done a single thing to stretch outside of the box

Menzingers are not a band I turn to for innovative musical choices, I'm here for executing well-worn formulas to perfection. Anna does that, America does not

Lol they werent innovative before. Just more creative and tasteful, as i said.
"they're good choruses tho"
Yeah, which makes it more unfortunate that they beat them to death. And its really only a matter of 2 times vs 3 times, but its that one extra that makes all the difference. With certain songs it can work, but over-repetition of a chorus feels like filler to me, and i get bored of hearing the same thing over and over, regardless of how good it is. It hurts a song's replay value, and it sounds lazy as fuck from a songwriting standpoint.

yeah i hate how greg's voice sounds absolutely suffocated on the mix. this band is on their way to mediocrity at an alarming rate

well their last album was better than the one before it, so no I can't say there's any truth to that statement. new album has a chance to be their first real misstep, but even then I doubt it'll anything less than a 3.7

i liked rented world considerably more than this

them averages tho, m8. you might not have preferred this, but the majority saw it as a step up. half the songs on RW put me to sleep

i don't really care what the majority says. rented world is definitely not all fun and games like this one and they managed to pull it off just fine imo, i really dig its heaviness

the music video was great. its like they took The National's music video for Graceless and Menz'd it up. song was decent. better than the other two.

that transition when Greg goes out of the camera shot for a second and comes back up and he's in different clothes and everything went from bright to dreary is amazing.
