I'd call it a bit more structured and restrained compared to this, which isn't saying much. It still has catchy as hell moments, the Latin influences, and psych tinges. I suppose you could call it a matured version of this, or at least in that sense it's a good follow up to this.

There's more room to breathe, it's less chaotic/more of a defined structure to the album. In some key moments/climaxes it's infectious, beyond anything here at least. It could be considered derivative at times, as it's maybe closer to old 70s prog, also has a few moments that seem like unnecessary meandering (in fact one part is definitely pointless to this Demon's ears).
It's certainly a significant enough departure to offer something different, plenty of people prefer it to this one.
Edit: I see whilst typing that the above poster mentioned 'catchy-ness' and it being more structured.

I don't know... To my ears, Cygnus and Cassandra Gemini are the exact opposite of structured and catchy. I agree that the bluesy parts are good but Comatorium is a much more cohesive and structured record overall.

It has catchy moments, it also has moments where it disappears up itself on a weird unstructured tangent (much to the chagrin of many). I still find it more structured and less chaotic overall, but I can see why someone may not feel that way.

The first three tracks of FtM are what I was thinking of, I mostly stick to those songs.

I haven't actually heard Frances the Mute. Is it stylistically different?
Well, it's heavier and less meticulous than De-loused, so you should give it a try. Being honest, I think you should definitely try the bedlam in Goliath. That was the closest thing they did that sounds like the mars volta, for me.

Son Et Lumiere it's one of the most sublime album openers i've ever heard

Yeah, when I hear Inertiatic without it, it's not the same.

Lizzo just claimed that The Mars Volta is an influence on her stage show.

Still don't know who that is.

This album slays in its entirety. Ftm slays when it’s slaying... not so much the other half of it’s duration which is a headache. Amputechture slays for pretty much all of Tetragrammaton while the rest is also a headache. Bedlam is a goddamn migraine. Octahedron is totally the band’s forgotten gem. Noctourniquet i have never bothered listening to but I assume is yet again a headache.

I stick to the first three tracks of FTM, and they go sooooo hard for me. But this overall is more fun and has more moments. I honestly have never been that intrigued by stuff after this, if I've even listened.
