Okay but it fits the games perfectly

I guess yeah. but other Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda, DKC) have soundtracks that fit the games perfectly but are also just masterpieces outside of that context. Don't have to have ever played a game to appreciate Stickerbrush Symphony or Gusty Garden Galaxy

die.

context is literally everything when it comes to game soundtracks.
|
| |
imagine shitting on breath of the wild music because you tried to listen to it out of context

Breath of the Wild has amazing music though regardless of context. Rito Village? oh man. the Ichiko Aoba stuff is a bit lackluster at times but once you actually enter a town it's so good
|

context is EVERYTHING
|
| |
judging game soundtracks off of youtube vids is as woke as judging an an album based off reading its lyrics on rap genius
|
| |
and BOTW music is all around fucking beautiful, especially the ambient stuff

Well I won't say that Koji Kondo and Mahito Yokota aren't genius composers, but I also don't think game OSTs have to stand up by themselves outside of the context of the game (of course it's cool that some do). I'd say Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, and Yasunori Mitsuda are my top picks for best game composers

lost woods in botw is the best song tbh i like the whole game’s soundtrack tho
|
| |
but grant kirkhope stands alone in his ability to dynamically weave the music into the game
|
| |
I think the use of music in BK is so novel
|
| |
even Donkey Kong suffers from undynamic music. sure stickerbrush and aquatic ambience are gd classics, but get a third of the way thru the game and you've pretty much already heard all the music.
I do like how DKC 2 had a separate "YOU DEAD" theme for each song.

there's way more variety in DKC than Banjo, Banjo is just two chords + really basic midi banjo the whole time. and then any Mario or Zelda soundtrack destroys them both in terms of variety
also context doesn't really matter that much to me, a good arrangement is a good arrangement

i think it mostly comes down to the Banjo OST feeling generic, like it could be used for many other things, but there's nothing at all like Kondo or Wise soundtracks
