It's not just the "whiny" thing, I generally just don't like the delivery and the sound of them. I generally like vocals erring on the harsher side more in this kind of music. (e.g. As We Draw, Birds In Row, Loma, Barrow, State Faults, Manners ect)

i agree on that front for sure. i have the same issue with touche amore, who i can't fucking stand mostly because of their vocalist. it doesn't help that he is also a trite and terrible lyricist though.

Eh, the last album was listenable. But by no means good and I'm admittedly one of those people who can mostly blend out lyrics unless you can't escape how awful they are.
I guess I generally don't like all that whiny "woe is me, this world is awful, oh the emotions" shtick, especially with that whiff of pretentiousness where they pretend it's something more than just that. Idk, it just feels super "manufactured" to me.
I can feel or empathize a lot more with the Birds in Row singer yelling "bastard" at the French justice system. (which is seeeeeeeeeeeeeriously awful from what I've gathered)

I guess "pretentious" may not be the perfect word. Wildly hyperbolic, exaggerated to no end, stereotypical/prototypical, scene-ish, lame, pubescent. If those adjectives fly more with your style.
