I always felt like the alchemy indexes were all like pretty good vheissu b-sides
IDK for all the talk of them moving their sound in as many directions as possible simultaneously, it seemed like they'd kinda tried it all before

Yeah, I could see someone having that train of thought with Vheissu and Alchemy(s). You could probably peg at least one song from Vheissu to each EP that sounds like a precursor to the style they were going for on each one.
Regardless, I think Water and Air are both wonderful and top tier Thrice.

There's quite a few subtle things going on in this album. If you don't pay attention or relisten a few times, you may easily dismiss the record (I remember reviewer Theneedledrop dismissed the record without really appreciating the subtleties going on).

This does have a lot going on, a really energetic and rewarding album overall. I like To Be Everywhere a lot but this consistently has a lot of depth and complexity to it. To Be Everywhere streamlines their sound in a lot of ways and makes room for more simplicity and catchiness, which I understand since obviously a mid-level popularity band wants their comeback album to be successful and have some mainstream exposure.

The band should stretch their songs out a bit more again. To Be Everywhere was concise and predictable. They need more moments again like the end of Red Sky where they built atmosphere and reached a climax then played the song out. Although, you could say Red Sky was concise, it really wasn't. It had a spaciousness to it that To Be Everywhere lacks. Things weren't crammed together in that song. Maybe it's just production. I don't know what changed with this band.
This album doesn't have that problem as bad as their last record.

Agreed tho I think a couple songs on the new one have some of those really strong moments, mainly Death From Above and The Long Defeat / Seneca.

Yeah, TBE felt more like a blend between the Major/Minor sound and their older stuff, just streamlined a bit. Still some fantastic songs on there, and a few ones with considerable depth. I would enjoy an album with more moments like Red Sky, Words in the Water, The Whaler, etc.

Yeah, but there's something about the last record I can't quite put my finger on. The production feels crammed to the brim in a way. On some of the older records there's a free flowing style to them. There's room in the mix. It sounds super clean, also, which is okay for certain songs but some songs could benefit from a more loose and free Rock n' Roll sound.
I don't know how else to explain it. I'm sure it's a production issue though or maybe the band needs to just relax and let the songs breathe again.

Ideally, their next album will be an improvement over TBE. I do know Teppei is handling production on the next one though, which will be nice since he did a great job on The Alchemy Index and Beggars.

The last one wore off me pretty quick. I think I was mostly just happy they were back. Really, unless my mind will change about it again, a couple of key songs and Dustin's voice aging like the finest of wines are the only truly remarkable things about it.
I think they have kind of nailed down the alt/rock sound so I hope they add some new elements on the next one.

I know Riley and Ed were really hoping to go back to their heavier sound, so here's hoping they win that argument. The fan submission thing has me worried though.

Damn, it seems like they deleted most of the posts they made about it except for one on their instagram and the video for it is unlisted.

Fans could send in themselves singing this and it'll be included on the album. Sounds super cheesy to me

I never heard about that. If it is just that one part of the song, it might not be too bad.

Yeah it's probably just for a gang vocal effect, I'm not too worried
