its just missing that special something that makes a lot of the classics so great, i dunno what. it's definitely one of a kind but it just never really gripped me like some others

Well this is kinda closer in sound to some kinda ~~cult/kvlt classic~~ or whatever than an every dm fan classic (That makes sense somehow i just know it does) so iunno maybe listen to Here In After which is closer to osdm

Onward To Golgotha is my favorite dm album and it sounds very similar to this (and th band in general) so maybe that'll help you appreciate them more

i like incantation too but they were never one of my favs. I guess I prefer the Floridian style of thrashy yet kinda progressive death metal used by bands like Death, Atheist, Cynic and to a certain extent Autopsy to the guttural and crushingly dirty and doomy stuff. not that i don't dig that style, it's just not really what i want the most of death metal

and i considered altars of madness my favourite death metal album for a long time, and it's still way up there for sure but i think Human might just overtake it.

Autopsy is "guttural and crushingly dirty and doomy stuff" lol, but I get whacha saying with the others

I'm not really the biggest fan of a progressive-y style like that, maybe because I've never been the biggest progressive anything fan but it kinda feels a little, uh tame??? idk

Unless Gorguts count as progressive dm then I guess there's that

Gorguts are their own thing, i mean you could define them as prog but really what the hell is prog? I guess i like to think of progressive metal as kind of a fusion between 70's prog rock and death metal, very wild stuff but with attitude and a certain grace. but everyone's got their own definition. musical genres are pretty much infinite and ever-changing to a degree, so really there's no point in discussing 'em.

anyways i get that some people like the doomy atmosphere and feeling of being suffocated or whatever, and of course I do too to an extent, but at the end of the day i'd prefer an energetic metal riff-fest, especially when it comes to extreme metal. if I want doom, ill listen to Black Sabbath or some stoner stuff. but i'm not even the biggest doom guy as a whole so i guess there's that.

and re: autopsy, yeah they kinda invented the doomy style but i think they pulled it off the best as well, especially on their debut. plus they hadn't come close to shedding their 80's thrash and (somewhat) grindy influences at that point, so idk if i could put em in the same category as Incantation, Immolation, Infester, etc... other heavy ass bands that start with an I. or as some people like to call it "mvrk", heh. but yeah, i guess im kinda old school at heart.

but I'm not elitist I swear!!!

An album like Altars, to me, feels like a supreme collection of riffs but ultimately lacks the intangible, sinister vibes that a more recent album like Outre has in droves.

Word up. Riffs are still awesome, but atmosphere always triumphs.

Also hav u herd em?[2]

i think at the end of the day it boils down to songwriting. again, it depends on what sub-style you're really into, but the songwriting (for which riffs are kind of an extension of) is the main attraction for me. it often depends on my mood too of course, but i just love good ol' aggression.
