it has the typical Mastodon sound peppered with some nice touches here and there. Show Yourself is indeed the only pop-ish song. What bothers me is the relatively small time of the songs, clocking on avg around 4 minutes. Layers upon layers of music and the instrumentation is great. Strong 3.5, so far.

I like Show Yourself but it's not hard to see why it gets so much flack. This could very well be the least proggy album yet, then again this is a concept album so who knows.

it's not bad, but I do feel like its place on the album is -comparably- a bit awkward. Album is proggy in the same vein as Blood Mountain, because the songs are interesting and not conventionally written. For Mastodon standards, it's what's always been, but with new details... as it's always been.
