Jammed this for the first time in a while and forgot how good it once. This album got me into guitar music when I was 14. Heard a lot better stuff since but this still holds up nice. Had to bump to a 4.5. Still prefer Dookie and Insomniac though.

This is a classic to me if for no other reason because it brought me out of my strict classic rock / "all new music sucks phase" and served as a gateway into 2000's music. I could make a case that without this album I'd still be sitting around raving about Styx (which wouldn't be the worst thing, but still).

Oh yeah this is absolutely undoubtedly a classic. This and Dookie are the best records Green Day have ever, and likely will ever, make.

If Billie goes "bad religion-ish" he will probably make a 3rd epic album, but that's me.

From Dookie to this Green Day was pretty much the best pop/punk band ever.

My heart dropped when I read this

"Green Day Singer Makes Emotional Cancer Announcement."

Turns out it's nothing but an article of Billie calling a mass shooting "cancer." I agree but the clickbait is despicable.

I'm nostalgic about this album but it's not a classic in any sense except that it was the last huge rock album. It's a great pop rock album sure but there really isn't anything very insightful or creative on it except that it had some long songs and there's a vague story.

I can't fault anyone for not calling this a classic. If I approached it today it'd probably get a 4, maybe 4.5. But the nostalgia is strong and it was a real significant album for me in my late teens. It'll forever be a 5 for me.

''the last huge rock album''

Dude no! Coldplay released X&Y (2005) and Viva (2008) later than this, both incredibly huge and undeniably rock. And something like In Rainbows (2007), or Black Holes And Revelations (2006) were enormous worldwide too.

Great reasons to 5.0 Luc, I feel the same way about so many albums. The emotional connection/nostalgia can weigh so much in a rating.

I mean I don't count Coldplay as being rock any more than like Imagine Dragons or 21 Pilots is. And sure Radiohead and Muse were popular but those albums didn't touch this as far as like having massive hits. Like every knew at least "American Idiot" and most of the people I know had this album, I can't say the same for "15 step" or "Knights of Cydonia" lol

I don't really see why Coldplay don't count actually, especially those mid 2000s albums. Sure, their newer stuff could be considered to be less rock and more pop, but X&Y and Viva are well and truly rock albums (albeit very accessible and radio friendly, but the same could be said for American Idiot).

Why don't you count them (X&Y and Viva)?

I still think they're pop first and foremost, no overdrive on the guitars, etc. Whereas Green Day was (like Foo Fighters for example) a big electric guitar rock band of a kind that just wouldn't drop a huge album like that again.
