80s Crim is basically an extension of League of Gentlemen/Remain in Light/Bowie with an emphasis on Gamelan and tighter song structures. This is also why Discipline is often much more acclaimed compared to Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, the former straying too far from Crimson's MO and Three of a Perfect Pair delving deeper into improvisation but not committing fully to it in a compromise between Adrian Belew's desire to write pop songs and Fripp's desire to create quasi-industrial/ambient soundscapes (which in turn, was further compromised in "Dig Me," which is honestly one of 80s Crim's finest tracks.)
