i mean yeah, the argument that ulcerate are 'popular' because of online music discourse hypewaves on a niche backwater site with a heavy skew towards metal is also laughable, but we don't even need to take it to that level

Fascinating insight, so pop is what sput likes and trve is what sput dislikes?

i think the most "pop" aspects of Ulcerate are probably the 8+ minute long songs, complex song structures, heavy use of dissonance, and misanthropic lyrical themes. very pop indeed

> armchair linguist clutches at etymology

if u knew my bg u would see im hardly armchair lmao

>'popular' is an adjective meaning widely liked. it is not a term and can be used in any context

it is a latin word meaning 'for the people', hence populist, population, spqr etc.

>'pop [music]' is a term, defined intrinsically as music produced for mass consumption, or extrinsically as music

already been over this not calling it pop as the music genre but thx for your overdefinition

>'pop metal' is also a term used, shock horror, to refer to metal that draws from pop, whether or not it is commercially successful or actually popular

it is also used this way which i noted, congratulations. guess what things can be used in multiple ways, and i will use both literal and inherent definitions, you dont get to decide which or when i do

>per hawks' comment, this is obviously different to 'popular metal'

not rly its pretty popular which is the point

>tl;dr don't smartarse about language

lmao kiss my ass i guarantee i have at least 10x the linguistic knowledge as you

the most-rated album on rym - which is clearly not the site i was referring to - has just over 100k votes, which is a drop in the ocean compared to the numbers you'd have to be looking at for your opinion on the word 'popular' to have any sense of credibility (and this album has under 5k lmfao)
the only scenario in which it wouldn't be niche would be if your entire frame of reference was the crusty world of music nerddom, and tbqh no surprises there

Okay 1/ I don't like defending Smok but 'multiplicatively' is a word. It's the adverb of multiplicative.

2/ Smok, you are wrong. Pop metal is a genuine genre yes. But it's a umbrella term for heavy metal/hard rock that has strong elements of pop music, be it catchy riffs or anthemic choruses. Pop Metal bands include Def Leppard, Europe and even Bon Jovi.

Therefore, a dissonant Death Metal band like Ulcerate isn't pop metal.

yes i am in fact referring to the areas that dm is a common trope why am i repeating myself, and once again as said three times now i am obviously not referring to its context within music as a whole but its specific subgenre

Wait....Smok you said "established bands". Ulcerate has been around for nearly 2 decades. I'm not reading through all of this entirely but pretty sure these guys are establised lmao.

Thread needs to be eradicated.

What I'm saying is they are established and have at least 2X less listeners per month or whatever based on whatever numbers these guys posted. I'm just not understanding the argument.

And once again for the people in the back....WHO FUCKING CARES?????
