Of course not, Jake. But I do think it's a bit absurd for a person to 5 an album that thinks it is overblown and has throwaway tracks...to me that sounds like a 4 at best. Also, what does he rate an album that is flawless from start to finish? Last I checked 5 is the highest you can rate an album.

people have different reasons for rating an album a classic. maybe there are a few songs that said person doesn't like, but looking at it from what an album did on a whole, at the time is more important.

There are other factors involved... The impact the album made on music/culture, the sentimental value, the vision attempted and how it was executed (in parts and as a whole), etc....

nah it's not absurd. the white album, for example, has some individual tracks that wouldn't really hold up on their own, but taken as a whole, the record rules. but the wall ain't the white album.

if theres a single song i dont like, i wont 5 it. i think of the rating scale as more of a percentage of the album that i enjoy, rather than "classic" being able to overstep an albums flaws.

Yea, this isn't the first album I did this with. As with most albums, there are always songs that really click and others that aren't quite there... in varying degrees. That's when looking at the painting as a whole comes in, rather than just gazing at the brush-strokes.
