Damn the t/t on this is IMMENSE. Only 5/5 track here for me. I’ll probably check those two albums soon and then come back to this to retry it

Revisit Phoenix in Flight.
Actually just revisit the whole record. I’d say the majority of songs here are 5/5

Don’t get me wrong, on first impression I’m feeling a light 4 overall, but yeah I will be revisiting this album in full eventually

I think the slightly lower mix of the vocals makes the instrumentals seem more loud and cacophonous, which is a good technique I've seen many bands use effectively. Makes it sound louder without necessarily having to turn it up loud. What I hate is when the vocals are like the loudest thing in the mix.

I’d rather have too loud instrumentals than vocals too loud as well, but here I felt it just slated the vocals more as background noise rather than anything of value. At that point, I’d almost rather there be no vocals at all on most of these tracks. I’d rather hear nothing than quiet in-the-distance incoherent shrieks. And that’s not even a knock at the vocals themselves. Just, when they’re so quiet, it’s impossible to pick up on anything else. Just not something I’m a big fan of I guess. Album still rules, just feel it could be better

which is probably the reason the mix on YFM Redux sounds so good too

For me, the vocals acted more as another layer of texture than as a focal point like most metal tends to me. In a strange way it's real pleasing to the ears despite it being throat shreddingly aggressive.

yeah, the emotion in Bannon's voice is easily discernable as well.

Couldn't agree more, and the lyrics and the vocals themselves are two completely different things too- always loved how Concubine's lyrics in the liner notes are nothing like what Jacob is actually screaming (and even then you can barely read them)

when I first tried out this album, I had no idea what it was
then Concubine started
“oh, these guitars are nice... and those drums... uh, is that a dying bird”
I love the album now tho
