Interesting, they closed with Future Breed Machine when I saw them on the tour for this album.

I was anticipating it and it never happened. I had some serious blue balls since In Death Is Death is my favourite Meshuggah song of all time.

As for Clockworks, the opening is monolithic but it peters out and doesn't go anywhere. Just feels like some riffs stapled together without any real build up. It sounds fine, but I expect more from Meshuggah at this point. And it's not the only song I don't like, there's a few on this record that just bore to me tears. Like Born In Dissonance which I think is just pitiful by their standards... Every second of that song is a groove that they've done better, and years ago. Almost half of this album is a wash for me but maybe I'm just a grouch.

Needlessly complex, and nobody in the band matches the drummer's talent. A real shame, as this could have been fantastic. The singer in particular, is downright unlistenable at points. His tone-deaf, monotonous, and one-trick pony style vocals are a real drag on the album. No discernible emotion is found in the vocals. The vocals also have this strange intensity meter that they never exceed or go below. The guy never gets out of his comfort zone.

Previous Meshuggah albums had more movement to them, as far as the music goes, as well.

Even records like Koloss have more movement and range to them.

Disagree hard about Haake being the only talented one and Kidman's vocals being bad. That's the way I felt for years before I got into Meshuggah. I thought the vocals sucked and I didn't get it, then eventually I realized the vocals are just another rhythmic instrument in the band and they're not supposed to have range. I do agree that this album is weak by Meshuggah's standards though. There's some good songs but mostly this is like an uninspired version of Obzen.

I love Obzen to death. It was hard to get into, but once you do that album just slays in a way that I wish this one did.
