This is old news and maybe this project with Devin Townsend is the break from Opeth he wishes

Hopefully, these guys need a break.

This album, for me, feels like the first Opeth record where Mikael has struggled to write.

Some really jarring transitions on here and some of it feels rushed.

Yea, he doesn't seem too happy too. This is missing the Opeth magic their other releases have and it's probably due to this recording-touring-recording cycle

Even in that interview I posted it seems like he's fine with pretending this album never existed haha.

really? i think this is much better in terms of songwriting than the previous two. strong hooks and much more straightforward, which works in their favor when they're doing the whole 70s prog thing

such a gr8 record. I really love how some parts just WANK ON AND ON. Like the intro for the title track.

seriously though pale communion has the best songwriting out of their three ''prog'' albums.

Agreed with Dominion. This one, while disjointed, feels a lot more natural in its writing and execution. Honestly, I thought Heritage was the worst in terms of aimless direction and struggling to write

This is focused, focused down a very narrow & boring path where nothing much happens for the duration. Heritage was interesting, distinctive & had atmosphere.
