its more than just one bad record though. they pissed a ton off people of with the black album. then they pissed more people off when they cut their hair and put out load/reload. then they pissed off more people with the whole napster debacle. st anger was just another in series of decisions that created a ton of backlash.
that being said they released master of puppets so they can do whatever the fuck they want
