I love Awake too and I never understood the problems that many people have with LaBrie's vocals. Of course he is losing with time many of his great vocal performances, but he remains for me a great singer and the legendary frontman of a legendary band.

The only albums where I actually dislike LaBrie's vocals are Dream Theater and Distance Over Time, but it's mostly because of poor production. The vocal lines in Night Terror are boring as shit but he sounds perfectly decent on it.
I love most of his vocals up until and including Black Clouds. Nobody could replace him and not make Dream Theater feel an entirely different band to me.

Fuckin' adore this album but have always been big turned off by so much of their other stuff. Even scenes of a memory.
Where else can I find stuff that sounds like the heavy on this?

Seventh Wonder- Mercy Falls is the closest thing I can find besides maybe Lemur Voice- Insights. Also change of seasons ofc

God I miss when LaBrie sounded like this. Shame the band went on to just write the same song over and over after this too. Miss this sound.

Agreed. I love the warm production of this. Great songwriting with glimpses of virtuosity. Very tastefully done.

I was listening to a few songs off this recently and it reminded me how much production has evolved for the worse. Most modern albums sound very cold, thin, and digitized when compared to older albums that were noticeably more warm and dense.

One of the most interesting things about this album is that apparently all the drum parts are triggered samples. Portnoy played all of them, but all the actual sounds were replaced and apparently Portnoy hated it because of how robotic it sounded. And here, 17 year old me, while getting heavily into this album, thought it had the greatest sounding drums ever...

I never knew that. I actually wish I didn’t haha. I love the production of this record regardless.

Hawks is now much nearer to us in space and time than he was in the preceding posts.

I'm convinced that you can't get this anywhere else. It's the guitar tone, the keys, James absolutely killing it...one of kind as far as I've heard.

It's also that's James has a very distinct voice, it's also part of why he is polarizing, but I don't know of anyone sounding like him

“ Fuckin' adore this album but have always been big turned off by so much of their other stuff. Even scenes of a memory.” agreed hard. This is the only DT record I’ve cared to listen to in recent years.
@hawks, quit them nasty fightin’ words.

Doing a discog run starting today into Friday. I am very excited for the new release. No matter their faults and no matter how far my tastes in music have changed since discovering dream theater in middle school I always return at least once a year for a bing of DT
